Now that popular verse, Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue tells a bride exactly what she needs to walk down the aisle to make sure she has a happy marriage. But where did this tradition come from and how does a modern bride make it work?

Every bride has heard of this wedding day checklist hoping to banish bad luck before heading down the aisle. Many brides listen to this faithfully. Have you every wondered why? Something Blue actually dates back to Roman Times. Something Old & Something Borrowed goes back to English Victoria Era.
Something OLD
Something Old symbolizes the progression of the bride’s old life into her married life. It is a great change to incorporate an old family heirloom into her wedding. The Something Old is usually given to the bride from her Mom or Grandmother. It could be her Mom’s handkerchief she had from her wedding or her grandmother’s pearls. In times past, the bride always got the wedding dress from her mother but today’s brides are choosing to purchase a new dress and using“old” accessories such as tiara, veil, or jewelry.
Something NEW
Something New symbolizes hope in the brides new life. The “new” you will discover is not hard to check off the list. You pretty much have a lot of new things on your wedding day – your dress, your ring, your veil so that’s a pretty easy one.
Something BORROWED
What about Something Borrowed? Something Borrowed is supposed to be from a happily married family or couple given to the ride. It could be from the littlest thing to the biggest thing.
Something BLUE
Last but not least is Something Blue. The color blue has been associated with weddings since Ancient Roman Times. It symbolizes love & fidelity. A subtle approach to incorporating blue into your wedding would be to sew your name in your wedding gown with blue thread or wear blue shoes with your gown. More & more brides are having fun bringing this age old tradition into their wedding day. Often times Something Blue is the bride’s garter which is usually Ivory or White embellished with Something Blue. Another great way to incorporate Blue into your day is to wear a Blue Sash with your gown or to carry a blue purse.

- Something New could be your Signature Drink. This is a drink that the bride & groom both love.
- Something Borrowed could be the Bride’s Father’s favorite drink.
- Something Blue is Blue Curacao. It can be poured into anything. It’s Blue, it tastes great & people love it.
Something Old, Something Blue, Something Borrowed, Something Blue has been part of weddings for centuries as a way to bring happiness back to the new bride. If you are the superstitious sort go ahead and use these traditions on your big day. After all they must have stood the test of time for good reason.

There is another verse to the old saying. It goes and a sixpence in your shoe. However I beleive this may have sort of been weened out because the sixpence went out of circulation in 1981. But anyway I just thought you might like to know.
